EastdaleCI's Library Newsletter and Photos from the 'Welcome Back BBQ'

Teacher Ms. Johnston has published and posted a resourceful Library Newsletter for staff and students to access the many resources, new acquisitions and workshops to support student learning.
Thanks to Ms. Johnston for the newsletter (click here) or visit our school website to access and view other important items and dates.

Thanks to staff and our student ambassadors who help make our 'Welcome Back BBQ and Tour of Classrooms' a success. Parents were able to follow their son/daughter's timetable and meet the respective teacher. Curriculum and classroom expectations were discussed as well as student participation in various clubs activities, athletics and events. The event ended with a wonderful rooftop BBQ thanks to Eastdale's hospitality department.

Ancestral Teachings At Eastdale CI

Aanishna, Boozhoo: (Welcome, Hello)
What many of you may not know is that Eastdale C.I. was built on land that once belonged to the First Nations People.
To show our respect and teach our staff, students and community about the First Nations people, we have begun a year long journey together.
On Tuesday, September 13, 2016 we laid tobacco around the school to thank the Creator for the land and all that he has given us.
During our welcome back assembly (photos below) we started our teachings by acknowledging all our students that our descendants of the First Nations people. Students also had the opportunity to sign up for various clubs and activities.
We will continue to give a different teaching or First Nations fact throughout the school year and feature in our school newsletters.

(Thank You)

Welcome Back BBQ & Tour of Classrooms

All Parents and Guardians are invited to a 'Welcome Back Parent BBQ & Tour of Classrooms'

Agenda
4 p.m. to 5 p.m. – Tour of classrooms
5 p.m. to 6 p.m. – Light supper (burgers, hotdogs, etc) on the Rooftop.

Our students have a better chance of success if parents/guardians are involved with their child's school.
Please note this is not a time/venue for parents to ask questions specific questions about their child, the
focus of the 'Tour of Classrooms' is on your child's classroom, curriculum, expectations re: homework/behaviour/participation on field trips. Parents will be given a generic timetable (non-credit or credit). Depending on the number of parents and teachers attending we will plan accordingly.

We look forward to seeing you!

School Opening! The First Week

On the first day of school, it was a great to see many of our returning students enthusiastically greeting our teachers and educational assistants/support staff. To the parents of bussed son/daughters, thank you for your patience with the ongoing busing issues. Our main office made attempts to contact the transportation services with much frustration and as well to notify parents as necessary. This is a priority issue with the school board with the goal to resolve all transportation issues as soon as possible.

On Friday, Sept 9th, our grade 9 students new to Eastdale attended a leadership conference at the Etobicoke Field Services Centre. The full day consisted of fun filled and engaging team-building, group challenges and activity based learning (see the photos below). This opportunity has helped students build confidence and community that we will continue to strengthen throughout the school year. A big thanks to Mr. Perry and Ms. Driscoll for making this event happen!

Parents are invited to our 'Welcome BBQ' on Thursday, September 15. Parents will also have the opportunity to visit classrooms. (from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m.)

This coming Friday, Sept 16th,  the Wilderness Activity Group (WAG) will be travelling to the Etobicoke Field Studies Centre for their first of many excursions. The WAG students, along with teacher David Servos, will have the opportunity to experience nature walks, hiking, pond exploration and cook-out lunches. This is an enriched and rewarding experience open to all Eastdale students. We are hoping for another excursion this fall, a winter trip to Scarborough Outdoor Education School (outside of Toronto) and a hiking expedition next spring.
